Discounted Vacations for Smog-stricken City Dwellers

Residents of polluted cities in Northern Italy are the target of discounts aimed at bringing their overworked lungs to cleaner Liguria.

"We’ve got plenty of fresh air here on the coast," said Sandro Biasotti, president of the region of Liguria. "It’s our duty to encourage people from nearby areas a way out of polluted cities."

Lack of rain has sent pollution levels soaring throughout Italy over the last two weeks. Milan, Turin and Gorizia topped the list of the most polluted Italian cities–medical experts likened a day in Milan’s haze to smoking 15 cigarettes.
Measures to reduce smog from traffic include no-car Sundays and access to cities through an alternating license plate scheme.

Italy by Numbers: Bring on the Curves

70% Italian men would like partner to gain weight
40% of these find heavier women "more sensual"
31% would like partner to have a fuller bum
25% would like partner to have a fuller bust

The ideal woman is a Mediterranean beauty with dangerous curves, according to a poll of 760 Italian men between the ages of 24-60. The men, polled by a popular monthly, claim they wage a constant battle to make partners gain weight and find constant dieting “women’s most annoying obsession.” That said, they’re still pretty picky about weights and measures: while only 8% said they would be happy to have a partner who weighed less than 50k (around 120lbs) some 36% said a women’s ideal weight is somewhere between 60-65k ( approx. 130-140lbs).

Aya! Pepper spray in supermarkets banks on fear

Residents in Northern Italy can now pick up pepper spray for personal defense, next to the toothpaste and bandages, from a national supermarket chain.
In recent years, crime has become the main worry for 37% of Italians, taking priority over unemployment, drug abuse and immigration. That figure, however, jumps to 48% in the North-East of Italy–hence the marketing ploy. The product, called “Fermo!” (Stop!), debuted in the Como area for a trial two-week run.
“The decision to carry the product in supermarkets is based on consumer demand,” said a press release from marketing company Di.tex.al. “There are no legal barriers to selling it in chain stores and the instructions underline the importance of using it only for personal defense.” A squirt of Fermo, which retails for e.13, 99 (around $15), can render an adult “out of order” for several minutes. There is no age limit for sales of the product, made from hot cayenne peppers. Pepper spray, legal in Italy since 1998, was previously only sold in specialty stores.

Enforcing No-smoking Rules

Beware anti-smoking patrols: the Italian government unleashed inspectors in Milan, Turin, Rome, Naples and Palermo found them infested with smokers flouting regulations.*
While inspections of hospitals in Rome turned up few in flagrante smokers (16 out 159 checks), Naples is a smokers free-for-all: in addition to dismal hospital statistics, some 47 movie goers were fined for smoking inside cinemas.

Smoking was banned in public places (hospitals, theaters, schools, nightclubs and on public transportation) in 1975, but public authorities have rarely enforced regulations. The measly fine was not exactly a deterrent–but recently fines were hiked (euro 25 to 250 about $22-222) and so have inspections.
In an effort encourage an unheard of snitching on smokers, the government has set up a toll-free number to report smoking violations: 800.998877

Personalized License Plates, Italian Style

Italians will soon be able to unleash their legendary creativity on license plates. Billed by local media as “American-style plates,” the Bel Paese version is, of course, a bit more complicated –plates must keep the combination of two letters, three numbers, two letters. The example held out for the TV cameras was practically incomprehensible- LU 267 CA- or rather “Luca,” born in February, 1967.
The change was announced as part of the new driving regulations, which also raises autostrada speed limits in good driving conditions to 150 kph (93 mph), requires driving school for scooterists under 18 and initiates a point system for driving infractions.
The package of new road rules go into effect January 2003.

Preserving dialects–for insults

A new use for age-old dialects falling by the wayside: insults. “Without shame!”* was the affront hurled by teacher and author Marcello D’Orta at diet guru Alma Manuela Tirone on television. The case went to the Italian supreme court where D’Orta avoided heavy libel damages because judges reinforced the importance of dialectical expressions. “The use of strong and stinging expressions–even if objectively offensive– which represent a social reality worthy of attention such as dialects cannot and should not be punished, ” judges sentenced.

Armani: ciao to luxury

Giorgio Armani made headlines this week during men’s fashion shows in Milan by announcing he’s "disgusted" with luxury. Never mind that it’s the cornerstone of his million-dollar fashion empire, never mind that even his "accesible" Emporio Armani lines are considered expensive..Boh

The Great Baccal? Heist

Although dried salted cod (baccal?) is probably not the Italian dish coveted by most visitors, it has become precious merchandise on the black market.
Refrigerated trucks bringing baccal? to Italy from Norway have been hijacked so frequently in recent months that insurers now refuse to guarantee shipments anywhere south of Rome. A traditional favorite on Italian tables during the holidays, often served fried or with garlic and parsley, the Bel Paese spends ? 187 million (approx. $166 million USD) on baccal? yearly.
Gunnar Apeland, spokesperson for the Norwegian Truck Owners Association, says these hijacks have become business as usual in Italy. As a result Apeland has urged truck drivers to use guarded parking lots and to take as few rest stops as possible. Newspapers have reported that some refrigerated trucks have even hired armed guards to deter possible attacks.
Mario Esposito, president of the Italian Association of Norwegian Royal Stockfish, smells something fishy, "I hope they’re not trying to discredit us, once again, with the insinuation that all Italians are members of the Mafia." His solution to the hijacks means to ensure Italians will get their baccalà by any means necessary: "If they don’t want to send trucks here, we’ll send Italians up there to bring it back down."?1999-2004 zoomata.com

Three ways of making it from different parts of Italy…

When spring springs, early

The song of black birds usually doesn’t make the news, but this year mating-season tweeting started about three weeks early leading scientists to predict an early and warm spring for Italy. “It’s an important anomaly,” noted Giampiero Maracchi, director of the Institute for biometeorology of national research center (CNR) in Florence. “By observing these signs from nature we’re able to make three month-predictions. Temperatures in the second half of January through March will likely be much higher than normal.”
